Holy canolli! I was featured on Today's Creative Blog. Thank you Kim!! Welcome to everyone who is visiting for the first time!
I thought I would update you on my kitchen. This weekend, my husband started to install the crown moulding top of the kitchen cabinets. He finished this side:

....and now is working on the other side.....

Poor guy. He made a mistake while cutting the crown moulding (see arrow). You know what they say "measure twice, cut once", right? Well, now he has to figure out what to do because apparently the angle is "off".
Here is a close up....

I have to say that my husband "rocks!" He has such a "can-do spirit" when it comes to home renovations. He loves to take on a new project, research it to death, find the best deal in town and "go for it". He really is quite a guy!
We are still undecided on our countertops....here are some samples that we have picked up. My husband is "convinced" that he can install the granite. Ei yi yi!!
Which one do you like best?

Update -Here is a close up of the laminate chips (excuse the flash!!)...

Hi,
What is happening with the floor? You look like you have light-coloured tile or linoleum there right now. If you are keeping the floor light then I would go darker on the counter. I would personally rule out the blue-grey granite to the back as it doesn't look like it goes with the wall colour. Of the other two granite samples I think i prefer the dark one.
The little samples are hard to see but the front right one looks too pinky and the third one back on the left looks too blotchy for my taste. How about a closer look at the small samples lined up against your wall as that is the major colour in the room.
How's that for decisive - all I did was tell you the ones I don't care for. I love your kitchen, by the way. We are going to be doing something very similar with ours this summer.
cheers,
Blueberry
Hi Blueberry
You KNOW that I trust your opinion!!! LOL!! What would I have done without you helping me to pick out the colours for my cabinets!! My floors are going too. I am undecided on what will go in there but I know they will be dark...either dark wood or dark tile.
Good idea RE: posting new pictures of the laminate. Will do soon!
Hey Jill! I saw you featured at TCB and was so incredibly excited for you! Yeah!! Your kitchen is looking so great. Gosh, I wish I had it. I love the cabinets with the crown molding. Beauty!
if i had to pick on the spot right now i would go with the front right granite. although, i have to tell you....if it were my kitchen...(i'm the one who e-mailed you about your cabinets)i would do the island in butcher block and the rest in granite. However, my husband said NOOOOO to painting the cabinets. If you go on my blog and click on the pics in the last entry you and see my cabinets.
I have to say...your hubby does a fabulous job. your kitchen is soooo pretty. i can't wait until you do the completed before/pics.
Love the crown moulding! Good luck fixing the oops! I love the two granite pieces that hang over the counter top or the laminate that's the third up on the left column (darker, more variation). I think either those three options would look great with your white cabinets! And I'd choose them because they'd hid more dirt (hehe!). Good luck finishing the kitchen, it looks great so far!
I just saw you on TCB but since it mentioned your countertop decision, and we've been making that decision for weeks now, remodeling, I thought I'd give my 2 cents....we had the installer for Granite TILE come out today and are 99% sure that's what we're going to use. It's half the price of a slab, at least, and I think I'm going to like it just as well.....they install the tiles right next together, touching, so there is a minimal amount of grout inbetween, seal it all, and the kitchens I've seen look really nice. If your husband is handy at all, which it looks like he is, he could even install it himself, then it would be much cheaper even. In some cases it can even be installed over your old laminate (as ours is going to be). Anyway, just a consideration :) Ours will be installed in a couple of weeks if you want to know more then and if I REALLY like it!!
Looks nice...=O) Bright and very cheery!
Love the darkest granite with the hardware on your cabinets, and the stainless steel appliances. It seems to pull the room together.
The moulding looks good!! I love the granite on the right! Very pretty!
Ohhh do I see my Jamoca Granite laminate? The sample second from the top on the left is very similar to our countertops. Looove them. But I like the lighter one's for you -- love that granite on the bottom right or the laminate on the top left.
Visiting from TCB...
I do the molding in my house, so it wouldn't be an "oops", oh no....it would be an "opportunity for a big fern". Or I would try the best I could to match up the angle and caulk in the difference. I know, I'm such a cheater. Looks great though!
....and as for the countertops, I'd go darker to make them blend in with your range, instead of it sticking out like a big dark square in a sea of light. Totally my opinion, so take it or leave it ;)
Wow! Very inspiring as I am planning to paint my kitchen cabinets over spring break. Very, very pretty!
Hello, I'm a first time visitor via Today's Creative Blog : ) Love all the changes you've made to your house!! I'm especially loving your kitchen. We moved into our house last summer and I really, really want a white cabinet kitchen. I almost wish we had oak, then I wouldn't feel bad painting it. Instead we have cherry and everyone (else) just loves the cherry cabinets. Maybe in a few years I'll get up the nerve to paint. As for the countertop, my vote is for the granite in the bottom right, the one with the flecks of coffee/tan color. I like the warmth. Good luck!
I also came across your blog today via TCB and glad I did. Your house looks amazing. Bravo!
The funny thing is when I saw the first picture of your home I knew you were from Ontario (as I am). Just the look of the house.
I will keep following to watch the progress as you guys renovate - love it! Great job.
Personally, I love the darkest granite color. It would look so classy with the white cabinets! Also, I love your daughter's pink room! "Guess How Much I Love You" is such a sweet book - love the idea of framing pages of it!
I like the second on from the top on the left side. Your cabinets are lookin' fabulous! I showed my husband and told him "let's do this!"
My personal opinion is to go with dark counter tops. I spent mega bucks on my counters 10 years ago. They are still in perfect conditions, but I wish I had gone with a darker color. Go dark!
I, too, found you from TCB and I love what you are doing with your forever and ever house! In fact, I showed hubby the bead board on the your lower kitchen cabinet because that's what I want to do with our island.
Sheryl
Goodmorning
I looove your kitchen can i move in lol I should pick the black granit beacuse gettting harmony of the blacjk and the white in the kitchthen..black and white is freinds
definitely the darker granite on the left. It would help "ground" the space. I have those exact cabinets...makes me want to paint mine now!
Good luck with your decision. Can't wait to see the final result.
The kitchen is deeelightful, love the molding! My Husband installed granite tiles last autumn. Here is the finished product,http://robinrane.wordpress.com/2008/11/12/ta-daaaa-kitchen-accomplished/
but at my little blog under All Things DIY I have several posts on the whole process if you want to take a peek!
(I never leave my url in a comment but I really thought this may help your hubby decide what to do!!!)
Happy Wednesday!

Just saw you on Today's Creative blog - I can so identify with your updating efforts. I think the laminate third down from the top on the left is what we installed in our old kitchen and I absolutely LOVED it!
Your cabinets look fantastic too. I really want to do ours but haven't convinced the hubby it's a good idea yet.
what a difference the crown moulding makes! How lucky for you to have such a handy husband! Everything looks wonderful. I am a BIG fan of the butcher block, but don't know anyone who has had it. I worry about the upkeep? I like the lighter warmer granite, but wonder if the darker would provide a better contrast. So all in all that wasn't a terribly helpful opion. Sorry! Whatever you do, I know it will look great.

Take my advice, if you are buying the actual stone granite, there is not way he can install it. It takes the fabricators hours to drill the holes for the faucet and sink. Trust me, I thought we could do it too, one of the slabs broke before we got home with t. Apparently granite has small cracks and if it's not handled correctly it will crack.
When it came time to do mine, I found a great deal and had them do it.
You can see photos at my blog.

Hey there -- stopping over from TCB. Love the transformation. I've marked you as a "favorite blog" so I can keep up on the pictures.
LOVE the white cabinets. They will look beautiful with a darker floor, IMO (hardwood?) - and I personally like the darker granite. Did you look in to quartz (like granite, but is a man made material). I only ask because I have granite countertops and sometimes go bonkers with all the smudges! Although the look is beautiful, which is why I put up with smudges :-)
The kitchen is looking great! I like the darker granite.
I just found you on Today's Creative Blog, and I am so happy to have discovered you! I love the changes you are making and can't wait to do some more exploring. Love your kitchen by the way!
Found you through TCB and so glad that I did! Love the transformation. We are thinking of painting our oak cabinets white, too. We've got a house from the late 80's that we just moved into, and we have tons of updating to do. You give me inspiration!
go for the laminate chip that is in the left column second down from the top-beautiful!
I love, love, love your kitchen. The crown molding is incredible. Makes a huge difference...I'll definitely be copying in my own kitchen plans :-)
thanks for the info.............
this house building thing is just so stressful. i hope to never do it again!
Hello! I am over here from Christine's Wash, Fold, Put Away Repeat.
In reading back over your posts I started cracking up when I read you made a mistake making square pillows. GIRL! If anyone knows how easy that is - I DO!!!! I've just started sewing once again, and trust me, adding all the little phoo=phoo things like trim and beads . . . it got so complicated I wanted to die! But I did it! And was quite proud! I need to post those - let everyone have a good chuckle.
Anyway - loved reading your blog! I'll be back!
Thank you - Karen
It's so hard to choose, isn't it? The laminate I chose for my kitchen is the 2nd one down on the left in your photo. I LOVE it because there are so many shades in it that I can re-paint my kitchen in just about any color in the same warm family and not have to replace the countertops again.
Yes, I came from TCB too! And am I glad I did! What an awesome job you and your talented hubby are doing. Love your kitchen redo. Did you do the spray lacquer (sp?) or did you have it done? And I love the crown moulding on the top of the cabinets! It really classes up the look. My DH and I are completely redoing our home as well. We've got the bedrooms and one bath redone and are working on bath #2. Then we will start closing in the front porch, knocking out the wall and on into the kitchen/dining room. I can't wait. It will be an opportunity to redo the entire front part of the house. I'll be back frequently to check your progress (and steal ideas)!
seriously I love your renos! but more than that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the parcel I received from you! Thank you so much. To be honest I love Easter more than ♥ day! I can't wait to start the book.. and oh my kids felt like princesses and kings for a day- they actually got something from one of mama's swaps! woo hoo! Thanks so much!
I like the granite that is on the edge of your countertop. The one on the right. I would be afraid of installing it by myself though. ;)
Your kitchen is looking beautiful by the way. :)
Thanks for visiting my blog today!!! I am always honored when someone 'famous' visits! :)
Hi - your kitchen is FABULOUS! Way to go!!! I think I like the granite on the bottom right.
XOXOXO
Jen
Hi there!
I found my way over here from the creative blog. You and your hubby have done anawesome job with all your renos. You have inspired me. I am totally loving your kitchen remodel.
Counter tops....I think that dark chunky piece would look nice and add contrast to your white cabinets. That being said, I saw on Divine Design where she did a white kitchen and did a dark countertop. She said if you have a dark countertop, you should have dark flooring as well. Keeps everything balanced and looks fabuloous. Can't wait to see what you picked for the countertop.
Jill, your kitchen is so cute & crown molding sure makes a difference. I'm excited to be getting new granite countertops in a couple of weeks. My cabinets are white too & I'm getting one called Napoli, which is white, black & golden tones. I have to blend with a backsplash I already have. Yours is looking SO good. I want to add a little beadboard to the sides of mine as well & give it a little spruce up. I already have crown.
Kitchens are so much fun to work on!
the dark granite
Beautiful!
We have the granite that you have pictured is really dark - browns and blacks. I love it. It hides spots and spills well, but that just means that you have to really make sure you wipe all the surfaces down.
I like the darker granite countertop. It is almost the exact same color as I have in my kitchen and I LOVE that fact that it doesn't show crumbs that I've missed when cleaning. I'm not slob, now Ü...but you how much white shows every single speck. Be sure it invest in the SOLID granite, not tiles like mine. As filed in as the seams are with silicone grout, you still get stuff in there. Flour is a pain in the booty to wipe out. I gotta get my husband to look at your cabinets. I absolutel hate our oak cabinets and he has no faith in the painted looked. Sigh.....
I am looking forward to seeing what y'all decide. I probably would go with the darker, but love both granite options.
The molding is wonderful. You and your husband are doing a great job.
Congrats on being featured on TCB.
Your crown molding looks gorgeous! It makes me wish I had painted cabinets so I could add some.
