We do our fair share of painting at Forever and Ever House. Everyone says that using paint is the cheapest and quickest ways to update a room. That may be true but if you have an entire house to paint (interior and exterior), the cost can add up.
With that in mind, here is what has what worked for me to save money while painting my house:
1. Shop at the Dollarama for Paint Supplies
You can buy everything from paint brushes, rollers, paint trays (large and small), masking tape, drop clothes...all for well, $1!!
2. Spend money to save money
Now, if you are "good" at picking colour, HATS OFF TO YOU!!! As for me, not so much. In my starter home, my kitchen was painted FIVE TIMES before I got it right...and I know you are going to laugh at this...it ended up being white! When I moved to my "Forever and Ever House", I decided to hire a paint consultant to pick out the colours. She picked the colours for all the rooms in my home and the fee was $50. By choosing the right colours the first time, I know that this consultant has saved me money, time and stress.
2. Buy Behr Paint at the Home Depot:
The Home Depot can colour match non-copyrighted paint chips using the Behr paint brand. This is less expensive than other paint brands and has been rated as a high quality paint by Consumer Reports.
How about you? Do you have any suggestions on way to save while painting? I still have half a house to go so I would love to hear them!!

I just found out last week that Walmart's Colorplace paint is actually made by Sherwin Williams. So if you are a SW fan, it's worth saving a little over $10 a gallon. I like Behr, used it on my daughter's room. I save and use my old very worn sheets for drop cloths.
I've used the WalMart Colorplace paint and like it. Good coverage, good price, and if you don't like the colors, they can color-match for you. It's quite a bit cheaper than either Behr (at HD) or Valspar (at Lowe's).
i hope the paint you choose are ouality or you nedd to piant agian soon
Thanks much for the tips. I am a recent Behr convert. I always used Benjamin Moore. Hey, if Consumer Report says it's good..I'm in.
Those are good tips!!!
I love Behr paint..It's the only brand we use. I have to disagree with the comments on the Walmart paint. I have noticed it takes a lot more coats of it then to paint with the premium paint (like Behr). Which cost us more money in a couple of rooms because we had to buy more than one gallon. Argh!
I also use my old sheets and table cloths for drop cloths. Instead of buying tape, I use a piece of card board from the back of a notebook. You just put it along side your trim and paint away, moving it as you go. This saves time and money. No money spent on paint and no time wasting pulling the tape off! I have yet to make a mess with the card board. Where as sometimes if you don't get the tape just right you have to repaint it.
I use alot of Behr to paint furniture but I prefer the low VOC Benjamin Moore paint for my walls. Less fumes and it covers really well. I also use old sheets etc for drop cloths. I'm good about cleaning my good brushes so that I'm not always buying more.

I hate to paint I wish I had some tips. Can't wait to see the results though.
Funny, I just started repainting my living room last night at around midnight! I ran out of rollers so I'm going to the Dollar Store to buy more. That's where I like to get my supplies too. Why spend more than $1??? I try to buy Kilz brand paint. It's been rated #1 by Consumer Reports, it's one coat and is around $20 USD. I like to buy it when I head home to visit my family. I can't beat that. I like to tape off my edges too...it's so much easier to tape things off instead of retouches later.
One painting tip I've picked up is this: If you get interrupted in the middle of a paint job, put your paint brush (or roller) in a plastic bag, squeeze out the air, and twist it closed. You can put a paint tray in a kitchen sized garbage bag. When you come back, your paint will still be wet and ready to go.
Saves not only paint, but the time it takes to keep rinsing out brushes!
I love Behr paint. I have used it for years and never been disappointed. I also love those little painting tools with the small wheels for painting the straight line at the ceiling or around the trim. They make is so I don't have to tape off the ceiling or trim to get a straight line, saving me time and money on tape.
Have a wonderful weekend!

We have painted so much and the one thing I told my husband when we do another house is that we will only have ONE white for the entire house. But I agree is is expensive and I tend to be a brand snob. But we have always used primer before painting and I really think it helps.
I love the idea of a "Paint consultant"! Where do you find one of THOSE!?
